Career Overview

Claire has a passion for working with youth and adults in the fields of mental health and trauma.  Claire helps a client make sense of their world, find their purpose and assists them in regaining a sense of balance.  Her approach is simple, direct and honest.  She views her role to be that of a guide or partner in therapy, bringing her skills to complement rather than direct sessions.  Claire has a strong sense of empathy and understanding and aims to develop a warm professional relationship with her clients.

Claire began her work in the field of mental health while volunteering the Mood Disorders Association of Ontario.  Her work there has spanned nearly a decade and includes running groups, developing

online-peer support forums and sitting on scholarship selection committees.  She has also taken part in an Ontario Arts Council-sponsored writer's group for young adults who have survived mental health difficulties called "Mapping the Journey".  The individual stories are mixed with art projects that illustrate the collective and individual journeys of the participants.  The stories are intended for publication.  Claire speaks about the importance of early intervention in mental health to high school students, advocating awareness as well as dismantling stigma.  Most currently she is involved with the MDAO's Family Program, and has played many roles in moving their goals forward.

Claire has worked in a variety of settings including the completion of two internships at North Halton Mental Health Clinic and Catholic Family Services of Hamilton.  She maintains a part-time private practice at Reclaim Counselling & Wellness Centre, where she has worked on the TALK Program (Teams of Adults Listening to Kids).  Claire practices from an anti-oppressive framework and frequently updates her clinical training and skills.  She is certified in CBT and is trained in EMDR.  Social Work services provided by an MSW are often covered by private insurance, and counselling fees are eligible to be claimed as health expenses for tax purposes.
